Our Commitment to Healthy Poultry

When purchasing hatching eggs, chicks, or breeding birds, health and quality matter. At Pittsburgh Quail, we are committed to maintaining healthy breeding flocks and providing our customers with poultry raised under careful, responsible conditions.

Pittsburgh Quail voluntarily participates in the National Poultry Improvement Plan, commonly known as NPIP. Our certification number is NPIP #23-933. Through our participation, our eligible breeding birds are regularly tested and monitored according to NPIP requirements. This helps reduce the risk of poultry diseases and supports healthier flocks for our customers.

What Is NPIP?

The National Poultry Improvement Plan is a voluntary cooperative program between federal and state agencies and members of the poultry industry. The program provides testing, monitoring, and certification standards for:

• Poultry breeding flocks

• Hatcheries

• Baby chicks and poults

• Hatching eggs

• Poultry dealers

NPIP was originally developed to help control Pullorum Disease and Fowl Typhoid, two contagious poultry diseases caused by certain types of Salmonella. Participation in the program has played an important role in greatly reducing these diseases within the United States poultry industry.

Biosecurity at Pittsburgh Quail

In addition to participating in NPIP, we use practical biosecurity measures to help protect our birds and customers. Our practices include:

Breeding Flocks

• Limiting unnecessary access to our poultry areas

• Monitoring birds regularly for signs of illness

• Keeping breeding groups and cages organized to reduce cross-contamination

• Cleaning and sanitizing equipment, feeders, waterers, and work areas

• Using designated footwear or sanitation procedures when entering poultry areas

• Separating newly acquired or potentially ill birds from established flocks

Hatching Eggs and Incubation

• Collecting and packaging our hatching eggs ourselves

• Handling eggs carefully to reduce contamination and damage

• Cleaning and sanitizing incubators, hatchers, trays, and related equipment

• Maintaining clean areas for egg storage, incubation, and chick care

• Monitoring temperature, humidity, and hatch conditions closely

Why Purchase From an NPIP-Certified Breeder?

Purchasing from an NPIP-certified breeder gives customers added confidence that the breeder participates in recognized poultry health testing and monitoring.

Many fairs, poultry exhibitions, swaps, and state entry programs may require proof of NPIP participation or additional poultry health documentation. Requirements can vary by event and location, so customers should always check the rules before transporting or showing birds.
